Clear answers around bookings, insurance, excess, deliveries, airport handovers, chauffeur drives, cancellations and more.
Booking, Payment & Rental Basics
Booking Basics
What are the requirements for renting a car from Missing Link Car Hire?
To rent a car, you need a valid driver’s license from any country and an ID. A valid credit card is preferred, but in certain circumstances, payment in cash may be allowed.
How do I book?
To secure a booking, a 50% down payment is required. For one-day bookings, full payment is required. Any outstanding balance is settled on handover. Payments can be made by Visa, Mastercard, bank transfer, cash, Bitcoin or Ethereum.
What if I want to rent a vehicle for less than 24 hours?
You can return the vehicle within 24 hours, although rentals and rates are still based on a 24-hour period.
What are your cancellation policies?
For a cancellation at least two weeks before the rental date, the booking is refundable. For cancellations less than two weeks before the rental date, the 50% booking fee is forfeited.
Can we have extra drivers?
Extra drivers are free of charge if a valid license is provided before the rental. Cars may not be rented by one person and entrusted to a third party without prior knowledge and consent.
What do you do with my card details?
Card details are stored securely in reservation software with a PCI compliance certificate.
Insurance & Excess
Do prices include insurance and VAT?
Yes. Quoted daily rates include VAT and comprehensive insurance, but excesses do apply.
What is the excess?
The excess is your maximum liability. Any damages up to the excess amount are the renter’s responsibility. The excess amount varies according to the vehicle model. Beyond this amount, insurance covers the rest.
Is there a zero excess option?
No. A zero excess option is not offered. It is recommended that renters check whether their travel insurance or credit card covers car rental excess.
What if damages are not our fault?
The renter is liable for any damage during the rental period, including accidental tyre and windscreen damage.
Are there any hidden or additional costs?
VAT and comprehensive insurance are included in the quoted price. Additional charges may apply for extra kilometres or damages. A discretionary valet fee may also be charged if the vehicle is returned excessively dirty or if there is evidence of smoking.
What is the minimum age for rental?
Anyone with a valid license can rent. For renters under 25 years old, the insurance excess amount doubles. Missing Link Car Hire reserves the right to rent to any individual at its own discretion.
Delivery & Airport Handovers
Do you do deliveries and collections?
Yes. Deliveries and collections are available within the Cape Town region for an additional fee of R350 each way. A handover can be arranged at an establishment, hotel or Cape Town International Airport.
Can we drop off or collect the car in a different city in South Africa?
Yes, but because Missing Link is based in Cape Town, a one-way fee applies. Typical fees are George at R3500, Port Elizabeth at R5000 and Durban at R7000.
How do your airport collections and drop-offs work?
A Missing Link Car Hire team member meets you at arrivals with a nameboard. Handover is completed by digital sign-off, so there is no queuing and minimal admin. For drop-off, the team can meet you at the airport Drop and Go Zone / Parkade 2 Public Pick-Up Area, or ask you to leave the car with their valet parking partners in Parkade 1.
Which valet service do you work with at Cape Town International Airport?
Missing Link works with Katanga Executive Parking, identified by yellow and black branding and signboards. They are located at Cape Town International Airport, Level 1, Parkade 1, Central Boulevard, Matroosfontein, Cape Town, 7490. Their contact number is 021 936 3600.
Do you offer chauffeur drives?
Yes. Chauffeur drives are available. Generally, an additional R1000 is charged, but final rates depend on the itinerary and duration.
Support & Rental Rules
What if an accident occurs?
Contact Missing Link immediately. If another driver or witnesses are involved, collect their contact details and addresses. Take photos of the damages on both vehicles. If an insurance claim is required, a police report will be needed, and Missing Link will assist with this.
Can we swap cars during our rental?
Yes, depending on availability. Missing Link is flexible and is happy for customers to experience different models from the fleet where possible.
Are pets allowed in vehicles?
No. Pets are not allowed in the vehicles. You may be liable for damages and a valet fee if there is evidence that an animal was in the vehicle.
Are the vehicles tracked?
Yes. All vehicles are tracked for safety. Tracking alerts linked to irresponsible driving may result in cancellation of the contract.
Is it safe to drive a convertible in South Africa?
Cape Town and the Western Cape are generally very safe by world standards. Use common sense and avoid leaving valuables visible in any car.
